The Webinar

On June 13, 2020 we collaborated with Paris 2 Ancaster (http://parisancaster.com) to bring together a panel of experts to discuss cycling and training in the times of COVID. Many of us who use races as targets to build our training around have run into a hurdle with the cancellation of races, closure of gyms, and having to adapt to the new normal. A common thread that ran throughout the webinar was looking for the silver linings in this situation.

The Panelists

Patrick Carey

Patrick Carey is a speed coach and strength and conditioning expert located in Lake Placid, New York. Patrick focussed on looking at this as an opportunity on account of the increased chance for recovery and taking a longer-term approach to training (https://www.speedscience.com/single-post/2020/03/27/Looking-Ahead). He places aerobic endurance at the bottom of the pyramid and discussed using a longer term focus on building an aerobic engine.

Peter Glassman

Peter Glassman is a cycling skills coach and trainer out of Collingwood, Ontario. He is one of the co-hosts of the Consummate Athlete podcast which focusses on highlighting exceptional people who live multi-sport, adventure-filled lives and discuss the intricacies of training, recovery, mindset, and all things performance. Peter’s focus was on identifying and addressing the stressors that are a part of this new normal. He also touched on taking a look inside yourself to determine what feels right for you at the moment and setting micro-goals accordingly (https://consummateathlete.com/your-summer-race-is-cancelled-you-may-need-a-pivot-plan/).

Molly Hurford

Molly Hurford is also a co-host of the Consummate Athlete podcast and a multi-sport athlete herself. Molly’s focus was a spinoff of Peter’s introspection and went a little deeper into really identifying your personal ‘why’ for training. She also discussed making sure that we get back to healthy living routines that may have fallen off a bit when COVID first struck. This could mean re-evaluating your sleep patterns, dietary approach or even reframing exercise to include things such as family activities or walking the dog (https://consummateathlete.com/healthy-living-a-week-into-self-quarantine-2/).

Don Lesar

I’m a lifelong multi-sport athlete and a registered physiotherapist and also a co-founder of The Movement Physio & Performance. As part of The Movement team, I also co-host the PT Coffeecast and Move Local podcast. My focus during the webinar was on using this time without events to focus on injury risk-reduction and/or as an opportunity to confront your persistent niggles. At times it can be hard to take time to focus on pre-habilitation or to make the changes necessary to address an issue that is seemingly not affecting performance. I discussed some of the opportunities we have right now from incorporating strength and conditioning to altering your bike fit and modifying your training load.
